Kangana Ranaut recently made headline when she was dropped from an upcoming Rajiv Menon film for demanding a fee that left the filmmakers stumped. Kangana reportedly demanded Rs. 11 crore as fee for her services, which is apparently brushing the roof of what top actresses in the country get paid. Nowadays, male Bollywood super stars get paid comfortably around Rs. 30 crore and upwards, whereas, the actresses rake in only up to Rs. 10-12 crore.
Back in 2015, when that Rs. 11 crore made Kangana the highest paid actress in Bollywood, Amitabh Bachchan, Salman Khan and Akshay Kumar were getting featured in the Forbes’ list of highest paid actors in the world, with the former two skimming Rs. 60 crore per film. In the Forbes’ list of highest paid actresses that year, no Indian actress featured in the Top 10. Deepika Padukone eventually cracked in the Top 10 in 2016 with her top earning being Rs. 12 crore.
Kangana wants to be paid similar to any male actor as she thinks its her right to get paid equal.
Kangana’s plea of equal pay wasn’t the first to surface. Kareena Kapoor Khan was popularly the first choice for Preity Zinta’s role in Kal Ho Na Ho. But Kareena’s odd demand of being paid on par with Shah Rukh Khan wasn’t entertained by Karan Johar, which left them with pursed lips with each other for an entire year. Karan ended up casting Preity Zinta and the entire episode was forgotten with the film impressing the audience worldwide.
