Organised by Jagannath University’s Department of Music, a two-day international music festival will begin today at the Central Auditorium of Jagannath University in the capital.
Renowned singers including Shaheen Samad, Sadi Mohammad, Subir Nandi, Shama Rahman, Laisa Ahmed Lisa, Samina Chowdhury, Anima Roy, Chandana Majumdar and Shafi Mandal, among others, are to perform at the festival. In addition, a handful of invited singers from neighbouring countries including India, China and Indonesia will take part in the festival.
Apart from performances by students of the Department of Music of Jagannath University, the audience can also enjoy music from the students of the Department of Music of Dhaka University and Rajshahi University.
Cultural Affairs Minister Asaduzzaman Noor will grace the festival as the chief guest at the inaugural session, while Professor Dr Mijanur Rahman, Vice-Chancellor of Jagannath University, Professor Md Salim Bhuiyan, Treasurer of Jagannath University and Dilip Kumar Agarwal, managing director of Diamond World, will grace the occasion as the special guest. Diamond World is a sponsor of the event.
Talking about the festival Anima Roy, singer and convener of the international music festival said, “Apart from academic commitments, I feel I have more of a personal commitment that drives me to arrange such events. I think the application of music and cultures in our lives can have an immense impact on social development in contemporary times. For that reason, this endeavour on such a large, international scale is an important responsibility for me.”
“I hope we can deliver an artistic and sophisticated music festival,” added Roy, who also chairs the Department of Music of Jagannath University.
Starting at 10 am, the event will run till 3:45pm everyday.
