Sources confirm that initial talks with Reeves have already started. If everything goes well, Reeves will be seen on the director chair of Batman alongside his upcoming apes movie War of the Planet of the Apes.
Ben Affleck was all set to direct the project but lost his appetite after going through a lot of hand-wringing regarding his multiple roles.
As he stated, “Performing this role demands focus, passion and the very best performance I can give.”
“It has become clear that I cannot do both jobs to the level they require. Together with the studio, I have decided to find a partner in a director who will collaborate with me on this massive film,” Affleck added in his statement.
The studio proffered Reeves the role and had a meeting with him on Friday. If all doesn’t go as planned, the Batman movie franchise could also consider hiring the Exodus’ director Ridley Scott and Don’t Breathe’s director Fede Alvarez.
Affleck will remain seated on his role of portraying Bruce Wayne/Batman, as well as work on the script as the co-writer with DC Films co-head Geoff Johns. But it is assumed that the script might go through an overhaul.
Matthew Reeves is a writer, director and producer. His directorial work on Cloverfield (2008), and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (2014) have been highly acclaimed.
