Last year, there have been many incidents in Dhallywood which were unheard of in recent times. We talked about hope and frustration but there were some incidents which kept the Bangladeshi Film industry buzzing throughout the year. Accusations, weddings, departures, new looks, controversies – you name it. Showtime, therefore, made it a point to note some of the best gossips and incidents of the year.
The Brihonnola chronicles
Director Murad Parvez of Brihonnola was accused of plagiarism this year. The movie was initially nominated for the National Film Award 2014 in the categories: “best movie”, “best script writing” and “best dialogue writing”.
The director of the movie was accused of stealing the plot from the short story Gacch ti bolechilo written by Syed Mustafa Siraj. However, Murad Parvez used his name as the script writer of the movie and after the accusation, jury members initiated several meetings on this issue. Later, the accusation was proved right and the director was fined along with the cancellation of the nominations.
Doob and Humayun Ahmed
Mostofa Sarwar Farooki started shooting a movie named Doob with renowned Bollywood actor – Irrfan Khan. The film received a lot of coverage when Irrfan Khan came to Bangladesh “secretly” to complete the shoot some time around March. However, a bigger gossip surfaced in November when an Indian media outlet stated that the story revolves around the personal life of the famous writer Humayun Ahmed and his wife Shawon where Irrfan Khan played the role of Humayun Ahmed. Humayun Ahmed’s family was shocked when they first heard this and said they never gave the makers permission to make the film with such a plot and opposed the idea. His wife even threatened to file a case against the makers.
Case against Mahi
One of the biggest controversies of 2016 was Mahiya Mahi’s sudden wedding and rumours of her previous marriage. Right after the marriage, many intimate pictures of the actress were leaked on social media with another guy named Shahriar Islam alias Shawon. After the pictures became viral, the actress filed a case against Shawon who was rumoured to be her ex-husband. Later, the case was solved through mutual negotiation of both parties.
Shakib Khan's new look
The king of Dhallywood, Shakib Khan astonished his fans with his new look in the joint production movie Shikari mid-2016.
In the movie, the actor was seen in a completely new look. One of the film's songs “Harabo toke” gained popularity among the audiences and received around five million views on YouTube.
Last Valentine’s Day, Porimoni suddenly announced the news of her engagement when she was shooting for her new movie in Chandpur. However, even before the pictures of the engagement were posted, a lot of rumours started flying around about her “alleged” wedding. Some guessed that the engagement announcement was used to suppress the rumours of her wedding.
Achol’s sudden departure from Dhaka
Achol’s sudden departure from Dhaka to her hometown shocked many of her fans on January 12, 2016. The actress made her debut in Raju Ahmed’s Bhul in 2011 and since then, she was seen in a host of movies.
At the end of the year, the actress informed the media that she had no movie contracts for the future which made her to take the decision of leaving the industry. Shocking, right?
Publicity or allegation?
On December 16, a movie titled, Ami Tomar Hote Chai was released starring Bappi and Mim but faced major controversy regarding the movie before the release.
The lead actor of the movie Bappi filed a case against the director Anonno Mamun stating that the dubbing used for his role was humiliating for him and he wouldn't tolerate it. Later, after the release of the movie, it was found that it was merely a publicity stunt which was suggested by the director himself.
From anchor to actress
Two famous TV personalities and anchors- Masuma Rahman Nabila and Bubli made their debut in Dhallywood in 2016. Surprisingly, both of them achieved success with their performances. Bubli starred in two movies with Shakib Khan named Bossgiri and Shooter while Masuma Rahman Nabila starred in Aynabaji opposite Chanchal Chowdhury.

The heroine of the movie is a Tamil-Bollywood actress named Kavita Radheshyam and the genre is basically horror which will be released on Valentine’s Day this year.
