If you missed it, yesterday was Matthew McConaughey’s 47th birthday. Naturally, we put together a list that is worth watching, especially if you’re a fan of his acting career. For quite some time, there were glimpses of his acting brilliance but it never came to complete fruition until around 2006. Even though there might have been a few gems since he started acting in the early 90s, his more noteworthy performances came in a recent string of success, leading up to his Oscar win for Dallas Buyers Club.
Kubo and the Two Strings (2016)
McConaughey plays the voice of Beetle. It might sound a little out of place for such a project, but the film itself was highly rated by both audiences and crictics. The film is about a young boy named Kubo (Art Parkinson), who must locate a magical suit of armour worn by his late father in order to defeat a vengeful spirit from the past.
Another Christopher Nolan directed film, this is about a team of explorers that travel through a wormhole in space in an attempt to ensure humanity’s survival. The movie all stars Anne Hathaway, Jessica Chastain and a significant cameo by Matt Damon.
True Detective (2014)
Matthew McConaughey really caught on fire around this time of his career. Back to back winners, many would say. This time, he took his acting talents to the small screen presented by HBO. The show was an instant hit, gripping the audience like no other, and more importantly, the performance given by McConaughey. The show is an anthology series in which local police investigations reveal personal and professional secrets of those involved, both within and outside the law.
Dallas Buyers Club (2013)
The film was nominated for a total of six Academy Awards, including Best Picture. But we also know this is the film that McConaughey was finally acknowledged as the best actor in Hollywood. The film takes place in 1985 Dallas, where electrician and hustler Ron Woodroof works around the system to help AIDS patients get the medication they need after he is diagnosed with the disease.
The Lincoln Lawyer (2011)
It’s not the first time that Matthew McConaughey threw his weight around in the courtroom. In this crime thriller, he plays the defence lawyer Mich Haller, who literally works out of his Lincoln Town Car. Haller is approached with a case revolving around a wealthy realtor who is accused of assaulting a prostitute. The man claims that the woman is simply trying to get nothing but money out of the entire ordeal. But as Haller looks closer at the evidence, he learns that this case could be linked to an older case of his.
We Are Marshall (2006)
There is no secret that McConaughey is a huge American football fan, one of the biggest of the University of Texas (Arlington) football team. Go Longhorns! So it was no surprise he’d take his shot at playing the head coach of the Marshall University football team. When a plane crash takes the lives of members of the MU football team and some of its fans, the team’s new coach Jack Lengyel and his surviving players try to keep the football program from dying out.
