'We're transforming the Bangladesh Council for Science and Industrial Research (BCSIR) into a centre of excellence'

As part of the government’s measures to build a science-savvy nation, Finance Minister AMA Muhith has set aside Tk12,200 crore for the Ministry of Science and Technology in the proposed budget for FY2018-19.

He announced the allocation for the ministry while placing the budget in the House.

The fresh allocation is Tk1,163 crore higher than that allocated in the outgoing fiscal year.

"We've widened the coverage of the ongoing science quiz contest and extended it from district to upazila level with an aim to kindle students’ interest in science and technology," Muhith said in his budget speech.

He said they have begun opening branches of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Novo Theatre in Khulna, Barisal, Rangpur, Sylhet, Mymensingh, and Chittagong divisions.

"The coverage of Science Olympiad has been expanded to division, district, and upazila levels in addition to organizing subject-based Science Olympiad," he added.

The minister said they were providing assistance to the private institutions concerned to organize more such programs.

"We're transforming the Bangladesh Council for Science and Industrial Research (BCSIR) into a centre of excellence as well as a centre for technology transfer and innovation."

Measures have been taken to strengthen the capacity and infrastructure of Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission to ensure nuclear security and safety from radiation, he added.
