Shut down the border. Now

Our hospitals and medical staff are already being overwhelmed by the sheer numbers of people requiring treatment

Update : 24 Apr 2021, 02:12 AM

Our heart goes out to all citizens of India who are currently battling what is possibly the worst surge of Covid-19 the world has seen, reporting more than 300,000 infections every day.

This has resulted in pain and suffering on a scale that is perhaps impossible to imagine, and it is not something that Bangladesh, being at similar risk, can afford to treat lightly.

As a nation in its second week of a strict lockdown and also on the verge of another economic struggle, it is imperative that we shut down our borders with India immediately so that the situation is not worsened to an extent that we cannot contain it.

Bangladesh is already experiencing record-breaking Covid-19 cases and subsequent deaths on a daily basis, and our hospitals and medical staff are already being overwhelmed by the sheer numbers of people requiring treatment and assistance with the limited resources we have.

This situation has only been worsened by the emergence of deadlier strains of the virus, the effects of which we are already seeing in those affected: Close to half of those being affected by the virus are requiring hospitalization, while almost half among those hospitalized have perished.

These are truly alarming numbers, and they warn of even more dangerous numbers to come. Canada, UK, UAE, and Singapore are among the growing list of countries that have already suspended flights from India until further notice and the numbers do not lie: Indians accounted for 20% of international arrivals but represented over 50% of those who tested positive for Covid-19.

No, this is not a risk we can afford to take. The border must be shut down.
