ED: A cause for grave concern

If left unchecked, it could only be a matter of time before the Rohingya camps become a hub of criminal activity

The fact that at least six people have been killed in an attack on a madrasa at Cox’s Bazar’s Rohingya camp is not only terrifying for those living and working there, but also rather worrisome for the national security scenario of the country as a whole.

This is especially so considering the fact that, a few weeks ago, Rohingya leader Md Mohibullah was shot to death in Ukhiya’s Kutupalong refugee camp -- a loss that was equally tragic and devastating, as this newspaper has editorialized.

So far, the attackers have yet to be identified and, considering the time-frame and nature of the attack, there is definitely the likelihood that both these attacks are connected, and were carried out by the same group.

Either way, these incidents cannot be taken lightly, and must be fully investigated in order to get to the bottom of who were responsible and, perhaps more importantly, what their purpose was.

The emergence of any organized group willing to kill for their cause is a notion that threatens not only the lives of the Rohingya, but of every single individual within Bangladesh’s borders.

As such, while investigations must be prioritized, the law and order situation overall inside the Rohingya camps must also be improved to ensure that these attackers are not emboldened further in the future.

If left unchecked, it could only be a matter of time before the Rohingya camps become a hub of criminal and militant activity, and when that happens, it may become impossible to keep these criminal elements and their violent methods contained within the borders of the Rohingya camps.

The Rohingya community has already suffered unimaginably at the hands of the Myanmar Army, and it is incumbent upon us to ensure their safety and security for the duration they reside in Bangladesh.
