We hope journalists in Bangladesh as well as around the world will be inspired by the work of these two brave journalists

Our congratulations go out to Maria Ressa of the Philippines and Dmitry Muratov of Russia -- the investigative journalists who were awarded this year’s Nobel Peace Prize for their work in promoting the freedom of the press and free expression.

The Nobel committee’s decision to bring to attention the issue of press freedom, which has fallen prey in recent years to increasingly threatening conditions globally, is an admirable one that could not have come at a better time, as it highlights how press freedom and free expression are both indispensable to and a prerequisite for true democracy and lasting peace.

Unfortunately, we have seen increasingly regressive and draconian limitations being set on the press. Here at home, we have laws such as the Digital Security Act in Bangladesh, which not only restrict press freedom, but also actively put journalists and other media workers in harm’s way. Time after time, we have heard of journalists being harassed, threatened, tortured, and in the most extreme cases, murdered. This malicious trend allows the truth to be twisted by those in positions of power, making way for misinformation and a culture of impunity. If the truth -- and those who work in service of it -- is quashed in this manner, a culture of peace and security will always be a far cry.

As such, the prize comes at a critical point in time, when promoting the freedom of the press is more important than ever. But it should not remain as mere recognition and be forgotten the day after; this year’s Nobel Peace Prize is a statement on the necessity of press freedom and a reminder that, no matter the peril, the truth will emerge victorious. We hope journalists in Bangladesh as well as around the world will be inspired by the work of these two brave journalists, and keep up the good fight.
