No longer can we afford to lose civilians along the borders

India has, throughout Bangladesh's history, been among its closest allies and partners, a relationship that continues to grow as the two nations continue to collaborate on a variety of issues.

However, despite this close relationship, which has only blossomed under the current ruling party's regime over the past decade or so, some issues have remained unresolved, with the incidents along the Bangladesh-India border ranking among the most contentious.

To that end, it is encouraging to see that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi both bring these incidents to light during the latter’s visit to Bangladesh over the weekend.

PM Modi spoke of ground-level cooperation between both nations to stop these incidents, and while this is necessary, what is really required is a commitment, to seriously look into the matter and devise a solution that puts an end to these border killings for good.

These are necessary conversations that need to happen; no longer can we afford to lose civilians along the borders. And while these discussions are imperative, they must translate into meaningful action.

India and Bangladesh have plenty to look forward to in the future, both in the short and long terms, with both nations seeking to capitalize on mutually beneficial agreements.

But for our relationship to truly prosper, we must not only celebrate all that we have in common, but also look into addressing issues in areas where we do not.

That is the only way this partnership between the two nations can truly reach its potential.
