In their haste to complete the project, there is fear of cutting corners and ignoring safety protocols

Bangladesh has undoubtedly made impressive progress in its quest to reach middle income status. Unfortunately, there remain plenty of issues that continue to hold us back, and the incessant delays in the completion of some of our biggest and most important projects rank as among the most significant.

The Dhaka Elevated Expressway is one such project: Construction for the project began in 2011, with a budget of Tk8,703 crore for completion in 2015, with a design to ease the ever-increasing traffic in Dhaka.

However, as of 2021, there is little sign that the project will be completed any time soon, while the budget for the project keeps on increasing. What is particularly frustrating, is that such delays have become so commonplace that they have become the norm and expectation.

Suffice to say, these are not the practices that a country with development deadlines should be normalizing, and it does not bode well for the future of Bangladesh. Moreover, there continue to be promises that eventually cannot be fulfilled.

This adds a new problem -- in their haste to complete the project, there is fear of cutting corners and ignoring safety protocols, ultimately resulting in a finished project that is not of the highest standards, and thus susceptible to problems in the future.

Whether it is managing funds for projects, disputes among the stakeholders and authorities, navigating bureaucratic red tape, or simply a case of negligence, disregard, and a lack of prioritization, the fact of the matter is that it is Bangladesh and its citizens who suffer, and tax-payer’s money squandered, when we continue to see these delays.

This cannot continue in this fashion. If Bangladesh is indeed to reach its potential as a nation, it must prioritize meeting deadlines for its projects. Failure to do so will continue to hold us back.
