After all, Bangladesh belongs to each and every citizen equally
There is no doubt that, if Bangladesh is to reach its full potential as a nation, nothing less than a fully concerted effort will do, with everyone on board, working together in tandem, and learning to set aside differences and coming to a compromise -- all for the benefit of the nation.
To that end, President Abdul Hamid’s opening address at the maiden session in 2021 of the 11th parliament was as encouraging as it was timely and relevant, in which he called for a united effort to create unity among all, irrespective of political affiliation, class, religion, and profession.
This is the sort of positive messaging we expect from our leaders, or indeed, any strong, competent leader of a secular democracy where petty divisiveness can never be allowed to take precedence over the overall progress of the nation.
Make no mistake about it, Bangladesh has shown remarkable progress over the past dozen years or so, but to sweep under the rug the numerous issues we continue to see -- some of which are a lack of transparency or accountability in our public offices, to violations of human rights, particularly of our minorities, to the often blatant disregard for the rule of law -- would be a gross mistake.
To that end, a united front, where no one is silenced and everyone is offered the opportunity to present his or her concern, is the way forward. After all, Bangladesh belongs to each and every citizen equally, and in the diversity of our opinions and ideas, will we find the strength to take the next leap in our journey as a nation.
