When it came to cruelty, the Myanmar army left no stone unturned

It is encouraging to see the international community mobilize against Myanmar and its blatant disregard for human rights, as Canada and the Netherlands have issued a joint statement in which they have unequivocally stated the various violations Myanmar has committed against the Rohingya people: From genocide and mass murder to the systematic use of sexual violence and torture. When it came to cruelty, the Myanmar army left no stone unturned.

More importantly, they have expressed an intention to intervene in the case of The Gambia vs Myanmar at the International Court of Justice, filed in 2019 by the Gambia in an effort to bring years of impunity to an end.

It has been over three years since more than 700,000 Rohingya escaped violence, death, and destruction at the hands of the Myanmar army, fleeing their home state of Rakhine and finding safety within the borders of Bangladesh.

Yet, for the longest time, the world remained ignorant of how much the most persecuted community in the world had truly suffered, as Myanmar continued to deny what was nothing short of ethnic cleansing.

But we can no longer ignore the truth: The Rohingya have been tortured, killed, raped, and treated as second-class citizens in their own homeland, and those responsible for carrying out these heinous acts of violence must be brought to justice.

Canada and the Netherlands stepping up is a significant development towards the Rohingya getting justice. Now is the time to take action which forces Myanmar to acknowledge its crimes and ensure the safe repatriation of the Rohingya people as rightful citizens to their homeland.
