ED: Harness the power of remote learning

Adapting to the new normal of online education has not been as seamless as it should be

Update : 14 Jun 2020, 07:54 PM

With educational institutions closed for the foreseeable future as a result of the coronavirus, it is imperative that our nation takes full advantage of technology in order to keep the wheels of education spinning, especially considering the great strides we have taken under the banner of Digital Bangladesh.

This will not only ensure that the education of millions of young people across the country does not come to a complete halt, but it also comes with a host of advantages which can make the learning process easier, more efficient, and more effective.

The internet, and technology in general, if utilized properly, can tremendously improve the inclusivity and accessibility of services within a population, and there is no reason that the case should be any different when it comes to education.

As a result, it is encouraging to see the government and various other education institutes take the initiative in this regard, providing televised lessons and online classes so that students can continue to receive the education they deserve.

What is doubly encouraging is that, between 2011 and 2019, more than 45,000 multimedia classrooms were established across the country, with 50,000 more planned.

However, for many, either due to a lack of access or a lack of familiarity with the process, adapting to the new normal of online education has not been as seamless as it should be.

In order for remote learning to be a true success, we need to provide teachers and students alike with the proper training and ensure that the infrastructure exists for people to have easy and affordable access to the internet, so that more and more students are encouraged and become involved in the remote learning process.
