Petty tyranny is not the way

What the police have not been tasked to do, in any formal capacity, is fine the public for stepping out

During a global pandemic such as the one we are now going through, what a nation needs above all else is cooperation and compassion for one another.

To that end, it is extremely disappointing to see that, when it comes to the police, some of their most regrettable traits are getting worse.

That the police have a less-than-stellar reputation amidst the general population in Bangladesh is well documented -- too often in the past, have they been rightfully accused of corruption, blatant abuse of power, and outright disrespect and disregard shown to the civilians.

However, it truly is shocking that during such dire times, our law enforcement, instead of doing their duties and helping civilians, continue to be a problem rather than a solution.

Yes, people must stay home if possible, and the police have been tasked with ensuring that people are not aimlessly wandering the streets and not practicing social distancing.

What the police have not been tasked to do, in any formal capacity, is fine the public for stepping out to purchase groceries and other essentials, turning a deaf ear to all semblance of logic or reasoning.

This is harassment, plain and simple.

The matter is made even more egregious by the fact that these fines are often random amounts and can be “negotiated,” and shows clear as day that these law enforcers have little to no respect for the law that they are claiming to enforce.

Suffice to say, this practice must be stopped immediately, and the law enforcement officers bending the law for their selfish gains must be identified and brought to book.

The level of impunity enjoyed by our law enforcement is truly staggering, and the respective mayors of Dhaka need to take a long hard look at what is being done by the police in the name of the law and address this problem with priority.

The people are suffering enough already.
