This sort of behaviour is simply unacceptable
The recent attack that was carried out on Dhaka University Central Students’ Union Vice President Nurul Haque Nur and his associates deserves the harshest condemnation.
Led by activists associated with the newly-minted “Muktijuddha Mancha” (former BCL members), the attack saw Nur and 27 others get severely injured after an altercation on Sunday afternoon.
Given the positive turn that Ducsu had been undergoing over the past few months, it is nothing short of appalling for them to be subjected to such acts of violence and hooliganism.
While two of the men involved with the attack are already in custody, the barbarity of the attack behooves the administration to apprehend each and every individual involved and bring them to book.
Case in point: Two of the injured, APM Suhel and Tuhin Farabi, were literally thrown off the rooftop of the Ducsu building, at least according to Hasan Al Mamun, convener of Bangladesh General Students’ Rights Protection Council.
This sort of behaviour is simply unacceptable in any civilized society, much less in an institution that is associated, however tangentially, with our national education.
While investigations into the attack continue, it is good to see the act of violence receiving attention from the government, in fact, from Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina herself. Now that the incident has been recognized by the highest seat of our government as the appalling act of hooliganism it was, we hope the authorities will treat this matter with the gravity it requires.
This is the second time that the Muktijuddha Mancha has made headlines for their vandalism within a short span of time. While their name may evoke the spirit of our liberation, their actions have done nothing to justify it.
They need to be brought to book without delay.
