The killers of Buet student Abrar Fahad need to be brought to book
For too long have criminal elements affiliated with the ruling party been a thorn in the side of the government, tarnishing its image and distracting from the good work it has been doing.
We therefore applaud the fact that influential members of the ruling party’s youth front have not been able to evade justice in the ongoing drive to shut down casinos and bring the rampant illegality associated with them to book.
The PM has made clear that she intends to see this drive through to the end and that there will be severe consequences for criminality, regardless of the connections of the perpetrator.
This is no easy feat, and she deserves praise for her steadfastness in this respect.
We can think of no step that would win her more plaudits, or would be of greater benefit to the society at large, than for the heat to be kept up and for criminals to continue to be be dealt with with an iron hand, no matter who they are.
In this regard, therefore, the killers of Buet student Abrar Fahad need to be brought to book and face the full force of the law.
His brutal murder has shocked the conscience of the nation and those guilty must be held to account and face the severest punishment under the law.
The early signs are encouraging, with eight members of the university’s ruling party student front being arrested following credible allegations that they were the ones guilty of this heinous crime, and with both the AL general secretary and the Chhatra League’s acting president promising that they would not be spared if found guilty.
Even more so than the Jubo League, it is unruly elements within the Chhatra League who have done serious damage to the image of the ruling party, and so if the PM’s commitment to clean house is to truly come to fruition, it is critical that the authorities be given the license to get tough with the criminal elements within the student front.
This horrific killing is the perfect place to start.
Bringing those responsible to book will send the message to criminal affiliates of the ruling party that their days of impunity are over, and will send the message to the entire country that the PM means business and that her commitment should not be questioned.
