If there is one institution in the country that we would like to see flourish as a centre of excellence and integrity, it is Dhaka University
Throughout our history, Dhaka University has stood as a beacon of hope and change, representing the core ideals upon which this great nation was founded almost half a century ago.
Which is why it is all the more unfortunate that the Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (Ducsu) and hall union elections have fallen into disrepute, marred by credible allegations of vote rigging and irregularities.
Dhaka University and its students have always represented the future of Bangladesh. As Dhaka University goes, so goes the nation.
It is where the next generation of Bangladeshis train to be conscious citizens, and it is for this reason that the student elections there should be held sacrosanct.
If the process falls below acceptable standards in the crucible of Bangladeshi democracy, then this is something we must all be concerned about.
The students deserve better and the nation deserves better.
Indeed, it is not only irregularities that have been reported, but credible allegations of violence, with candidates being attacked.
This is unacceptable.
We hope that the authorities take these matters seriously and investigate all claims thoroughly, ensuring, to their best ability, that these elections are conducted in a manner that the university can be proud of, and that any transgressors are brought to book.
The moment we allow violence and hooliganism to take over our education institutions, which shape the minds of the future leaders of our nation, we degrade the very essence of Bangladeshi liberalism, which is the cornerstone of our nationhood.
If there is one institution in the country that we would like to see above question and to flourish as a centre of excellence and integrity, it is Dhaka University.
The integrity of Dhaka University must be upheld, in all its forms.
