A beacon of hope
The Holey Artisan terrorist attack is one that will forever be etched into our memories. It has been more than a year since that fateful day in July, but the horrors of the incident still live on. But, in the trying times that followed, one brave soul’s actions have also lived on, actions which have given us hope, and allowed us to fight for the values that this country truly stands for. Faraaz Ayaaz Hossain was only 20 years old when he was killed in the incident. But his courage will never be forgotten. Faraaz may no longer be with us, but his memory still remains. By standing up to the terrorists who strived to tarnish our nation’s peace-loving reputation, and in standing by his friends in their hour of need, he showed the world what it truly means to be Bangladeshi. His memory inspired us into action, and will continue to inspire people for generations to come. This is reflected in the Faraaz Hossain Courage Award, which is given to a young individual who exemplifies “exceptional personal courage and takes outstanding initiatives to help fellow human beings.” This is exactly the kind of person Faraaz was, and his bravery showed all of us that there are people just like him, amongst us, everywhere. This was indeed a dark day in history. But Faraaz’s light continues to shine, a light that no amount of terror could ever extinguish. One cannot even begin to imagine what sorrow his family has gone through. But we can find consolation in the fact that Faraaz was an exceptional individual who stood as a beacon of hope in the most troubling of times. Faraaz was a hero. And a hero he shall remain.
