All haat and no cattle

The city corporations are supposed to serve the interests of the citizens, but that has not been the case when it comes to the cattle markets which are set up every Eid-ul-Azha.

Dhaka Tribune has found that haats are always leased out to people with positions of power, such as ward councilors and ruling party leaders who profit at the tax-payers’ expense.

What is worse is that the deals struck when these lands are leased favour the lease-holders, not the city.

These lands are a good source of income for our city corporations, which in turn is used to improve the lives of the denizens of our capital city.

The authorities have to ensure that such nepotism no longer persists when it comes to the corporations’ dealings.

It is high time this changed.

When it comes to the city corporation, the people should always come first.
