For a while now, illegal firearms and explosives have been freely crossing over the border and into the hands of domestic terrorists, although the government assures us the militancy situation is under control.
The problem has been a lack of systematic monitoring of parcels in courier delivery services -- scores of guns and explosive have been entering Bangladesh from other countries through this inadequately monitored channel.
It is unacceptable that many courier companies do not even have scanners, so they have no way of detecting illegal content except by checking individual parcels at random.
Surely, this is not an efficient way of doing things.
In this day and age, we should have much more sophisticated technology than that.
If the government is really serious about fighting terrorism, it should take immediate measures to upgrade the surveillance equipment at the border.
