When a Dhaka court recently handed the life sentence to a woman for abusing domestic worker Aduri, our justice system was applauded for doing the right thing and sending the right message to all would-be abusers.
But the facts are still grim, with Ain o Salish Kendra reporting 40 domestic worker deaths in past year alone.
The latest incident of a 25-year-old being found dead at her employers’ residence in Banasree needs to be investigated thoroughly, and the true cause of death determined.
It is not enough to take employers at their word and deem such cases as suicide -- too often abusive employers make the claim of suicide to cover up what really happened.
It is time to send a strong message to stop the violence.
