The fall in the HSC pass rate is a good sign.
Certainly, grade inflation has been a problem in the past, and the decline in the pass rate reflects not only the improved grading standards, but also improvements in the curriculum.
We cannot simply keep relying on memorisation while ignoring the importance of comprehension and critical thinking.
To that end, we need a revamping of the education system, though it may seem like a tall order.
We need to arm our students with the skills to reason, think, and solve problems -- this means recognising the importance of critical thinking, and that being reflected in the curriculum.
