Cut out the sugar

Update : 19 Jul 2017, 07:06 PM

What a terrible waste of money.

Losses incurred by state-owned sugar mills now stand in the thousands of crores, and there are no signs that the sector will be able to get its act together any time soon.

Our state-owned sugar mills have been producing sugar at a production cost of many times the market price, propped up by subsidies. Furthermore, they fail to meet demand, forcing the government to rely on the private sector.

The public should not have to bear the burden of keeping these wasteful sugar mills operational. It is time to shut them down, and let the private sector take care of the market demand.
