For a new hope

So far, so good.

All eyes were on Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi as they met at Delhi’s Hyderabad House, and the two premiers did not disappoint.

Bangladesh and India, with the signing of 25 new agreements, are truly taking their friendship to the next level.

Going in, hopes were high that PM Sheikh Hasina’s visit would resolve multiple issues, which have persisted between our two countries, and Saturday’s talks were the first step towards that goal.

It is tremendously encouraging that 22 of the 25 pacts have been signed, strengthening ties between our two countries on various levels.

Enhanced connectivity between the two states, with new bus and train links being pushed towards development are the need of the hour, and we have done well to progress in that area.

India’s extending a $4.5 billion line of credit to Bangladesh on top of an LOC worth $500 million as part of their cooperation amongst armed forces is bound to be a boost to our economy.

Though Hasina’s trip is yet to conclude, if day one is anything to go by, the trip will be a success.

Improving connectivity and a line of credit which will aid Bangladesh in the march towards further internal development will go a long way in ensuring that the people of this country continue to benefit from the relationship and common history we share with India and its people.

However, it is crucial, moving forward, that unresolved issues such as the Teesta Water Treaty and border killings of Bangladeshis at the hands of BSF are resolved.

Indian PM Modi’s faith in finding “an early solution to Teesta water sharing” is a good sign.

Resolving the Teesta issue for good will be a win-win for our two nations.
