The duty of the police is to serve and protect the people of this country, and that can only be achieved once the public is able to rely on law enforcement

A big factor in the success of a democratic nation is a strong and incorruptible police force.

It is in this vein that the prime minister’s remarks, at the inauguration of Police Week 2019, about making Bangladesh Police a people-friendly organization, is a welcome one.

This is the sort of thinking that is required from the administration to improve the relationship between the law enforcement and the people of this country -- which is, unfortunately, often marred by a lack of mutual trust.

As we have seen in the past -- be it unexplained disappearances or acts of vigilante justice -- there is a lack of faith that currently permeates the national consciousness when it comes to the justice system of our country, and this must be improved.

As such, the PM’s remarks could not be more timely -- there are always instances when the public has faced harassment and unjustified torture at the hands of the police.

This sort of heavy-handed behaviour from our law enforcement cannot be tolerated anymore.

At the end of the day, the duty of the police is to serve and protect the people of this country, and that can only be achieved once the public is able to rely on law enforcement to seek justice above all.

The current government has contributed much to bolster the police force, having enhanced its capabilities and improving the police-to-people ratio, but the journey towards improvement is one which never stops.

A big part of our national progress is improving the overall justice system, of which the Bangladesh Police remain a crucial part.

We hope that the police take the PM’s words to heart and work on improving the service they provide to Bangladeshis.
