Floods won’t stop us
While we help the Rohingya down south, it is important to not forget that Bangladesh has other problems too. This year we have seen some of the worst flooding in Bangladesh’s history and this has resulted in a terrible year for farmers. With over 500,000 hectares of cropland devastated by the recent floods, it could have been a tragic ending to the year for the farmers. However, the government has not allowed that to happen. Thanks to a 90-lakh government rehabilitation program, farmers now have the opportunity to recover, and not only stabilise their own homes, but also Bangladesh’s agricultural sector. Farmers have been provided not with just monetary aid, but free seeds of wheat, maize, mustard and lentil on top of fertilisers to help them on their path towards economic stability. This is the kind of initiative we can get behind. The kind of program which shows that, in Bangladesh, we leave no one behind. It is also important that this is not a short-term initiative; we have to help our farmers until the next harvest, so that they have the opportunity to find their footing. While the government program will save the country from the brink of agricultural devastation, it does come at a price. Since the prices of fertiliser and pesticides have increased, the price of crops will inevitably go up. This does not bode well for the underprivileged. As such, what we have to ensure now is that we are better prepared for flooding in the future. As a nation exceedingly susceptible to the effects of climate change and the volatile weather, it is up to the government to keep this mind in the coming years. Flooding has resulted in losses in the crores, and this hurts not just the farmers but our entire economy. But the government has so far done a terrific job of looking after its citizens. Let us keep this going.
