The ongoing floods have taken a severe toll on Bangladesh, and, as always, it is the rural poor who end up suffering the worst.
And with widespread damage of crops, naturally the impending food crisis becomes a major cause for alarm.
However, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has done the right thing and treated flood relief as a priority, declaring that “not a single person will suffer from hunger.”
We applaud the prime minister for this noble mission -- the government has already taken steps to procure grain, and there is a plan to import an additional 1.5 million tons of food grain to ensure food security if necessary.
Furthermore, the initiative to give out agricultural loans to farmers deserves kudos.
We trust and hope that these promises will be translated into action, and the government will deliver on the promise of making sure nobody has to starve in the wake of these terrible floods.
