Untrained hands at the wheel
As shocking as it may sound, most drivers of heavy vehicles in Bangladesh are not licensed to drive such vehicles -- they only have licences for light and medium vehicles.
And there’s no denying that most road fatalities involve trucks and buses -- in other words, these heavy vehicles.
It is appallingly irresponsible of the authorities to let untrained, unlicensed hands drive these trucks and buses, endangering the lives of all those who travel on our roads and highways.
And although BRTA did launch a road safety training program last years, only 1% of heavy vehicle drivers participating.
Clearly, the drivers are not taking road safety seriously. But the authorities absolutely must.
There is no excuse for putting lives at risk in this way, day in day out.
