Let’s face it: Section 57 of the ICT Act is an ill-conceived piece of legislation.
There is simply too much scope for misuse and abuse, and it stands against the principles of free speech and promises of a Digital Bangladesh.
Ideally, it should be scrapped, so it is good to see Roads, Transport, and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader point out that misuse of the act was indeed taking place, which is indeed unfortunate and needs to be stopped.
At the very least, we must have mechanisms in place to make sure the act is used judiciously.
Without the proper safeguards in place, there may well be rampant abuse of the law, and nobody wants that.
