The recent spate of rain has shown how ill-equipped Dhaka is when it comes to the issue of water-logging.
Much of the problem seems to stem from Hatirjheel, with its extremely ineffective drainage systems which cannot cope with the monsoon rainfall.
Knowing the amount of rain Bangladesh experiences every year, it boggles the mind that it was not taken into account while Hatirjheel’s drainage infrastructure was being designed.
The problem has persisted despite experts suggesting, among other things, the creation of a sewage treatment plant to filter sewage flow.
The authorities need to improve the current drainage system as soon as possible.
The citizens of Dhaka have suffered enough. This cannot continue this year, or the next.
