MP Murad’s men ‘beat up’ engineer of model mosque

The injured engineer, Masudur Rahman Jony, along with several others were admitted to Upazila Health Complex following the incident

Supporters of former state minister for information and lawmaker (Jamalpur-4) Murad Hasan have beaten up the engineer of model mosque project in Sarishabari of Jamalpur for removing a foundation stone containing Murad's name. 

The engineer and his men were placing a foundation stone containing the name of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina when the mosque was being inaugurated on Monday. 

The incident took place at the mosque adjacent to Sarishabari railway station. 

The injured engineer, Masudur Rahman Jony, along with several others were admitted to Upazila Health Complex following the incident. 

Jony told Dhaka Tribune that they were on the mosque premises at around 11am when a group of men led by one Sakhawat Alam Mukul attacked them.

The inaugural program of the mosque and Islamic cultural centre was going on at the time, he said. 

Jony said that the men beat them up mercilessly and dragged them to the adjacent road. They also stole three mobile phones belonging to the victims and the hard drive containing CCTV footage of the entire incident. 

The contractor of the project, Manjurul Morshed Tarafder Sohel, said that a foundation stone containing Murad's name was installed at the mosque when the construction began but recently they were instructed to replace it by the concerned ministry. 

Officer-in-Charge of Sarishabari police Muhamamd Mahabbat Kabir said that he had not heard of any scuffle or fight taking place at the mosque premises but news of the altercation reached his ears.
