BNP-police clash: Juba Dal activist Shaon’s body taken to Munshiganj for burial

At least 50 people, including policemen, sustained injuries in the clash

The body of slain Juba Dal activist Shahidul Islam Shaon has been taken to his hometown, Munshiganj, for burial following a funeral prayer in front of the BNP's Naya Paltan central office.

Injured during a clash between opposition BNP and the police, Shaon succumbed to his injuries at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) on Thursday night.

He was one of 50 people injured during the clash at the BNP rally in Munshiganj’s Muktarpur on Wednesday. A brick thrown by a party activist hit his head, according to a video found on Facebook.

Sahon's body, carried on a freezer van, was taken to Naya Paltan from the mortuary of Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) around 6pm on Friday.

His first funeral prayer was held there with the participation of thousands of leaders and activists of BNP and its associate bodies.

In a brief address prior to Shaon's funeral prayer, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said the Jubo Dal activist sacrificed his life for the restoration of democracy and people's voting and other rights.

Fakhrul said their party will give a reply to the killing the Jubo Dal activist by ousting the government.

"The blood of Shaon has encouraged us to take a fresh oath that we'll give a reply to his sacrifice of life by ensuring the fall of the current fascist authoritarian regime at any cost," he was quoted as saying by the UNB.

After the funeral prayer, Fakhrul and party standing committee members Mirza Abbas and Goyeshwar Chandra Roy placed wreaths on the coffin of Shaon paying last tribute to him on behalf of BNP.

They also draped his coffin with a party flag as a mark of respect.

Earlier in the day, Shaon’s family members claimed that law enforcers were not allowing them to take the body to Naya Paltan saying that it has to go to Munshiganj without taking any detour.

But eventually, the body was taken to Naya Paltan after the completion of an autopsy of the corpse.

Meanwhile, leaders and activists of BNP and its associate bodies took out a torch procession at Nayapaltan alleging the Jubo Dal activist was murdered.

On Wednesday, at least 50 people, including Shaon, were injured in a clash between police and BNP leaders and activists in Munshiganj's Muktarpur over holding a rally.

BNP planned the rally to protest the price hike of fuel, daily essentials and the killing of three opposition leaders in Bhola and Narayanganj in police firing and attacks on different programs of the party.
