Transport fares up 40% on Barisal-Dhaka route

Launch fares are yet to be increased

Transport fares in the Barisal-Dhaka route have witnessed a 40% hike since the government increased fuel prices on Friday.

On Sunday, per kilometer fare was increased to Tk2.20 from Tk1.80. Passengers suffered as they are now having to count extra transport fares.

Kishore Kumar Dey, secretary, Barisal district bus owners association, confirmed the matter to Dhaka Tribune.

Meanwhile, neither the Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) nor the launch owners association have decided to increase prices on the river route on the Dhaka-Barisal route as of yet.

The launch owners association is scheduled to meet in Dhaka on Monday.

As of Sunday, the deck fare stood at Tk 250, single non-AC cabin Tk 900 and double cabin Tk 1800.

However, passengers complained that launches were charging Tk30-40 extra on the internal Bhola-Barisal-Patarhat and other internal river routes.

Several buses in Dhaka were reportedly overcharging passengers on Sunday, defying government orders.

The bus fare per kilometre (km) in Dhaka was increased by 35 paisa to Tk2.50 per km, but passengers claimed they were charged more than double.

On Friday, the government raised prices of diesel and kerosene by 42.5% to Tk114 per litre, octane by 51.1% to Tk135 per litre, and petrol by 51.7% to Tk130 per litre without any precaution or discussion with stakeholders.
