47% of Sylhet division croplands underwater
Sylhet district most severely affected, according to Department of Agricultural Extension
Floodwaters have submerged around 46.73% of croplands in Sylhet division, dealing a huge blow to local farmers.
Around 189,636 hectares of land in the division is used for growing vegetables and paddy. Of this, 88,622 hectares of land is now underwater.
According to the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE), around 146,436 hectares of land in the region is used to cultivate Aus rice. Of this, 44.93% rice is now submerged in floodwaters.
Besides, 99.75% of sown Aman rice and 27.77% of vegetables are now also underwater.
The flooding had hit Sylhet district the worst, Md Mosharraf Hossain Khan, additional director of the department, told Dhaka Tribune on Thursday.
The damage was estimated from June 9 to June 22, he added.
