Sitakunda fire: 8 firefighters killed in line of duty
Another 21 firefighters injured
At least eight firefighters have died while trying to douse a fire at an inland container depot in Sitakunda upazila of Chittagong.
Fire Service and Civil Defence Director General Brig Gen Md Main Uddin on Sunday briefed the media on the fire that broke out at BM Container Depot the night prior.
Another 21 firefighters had sustained injuries, he said. “Six of them have been released after first aid. The remaining 15 are receiving treatment at Chittagong CMH (Combined Military Hospital).”
At least 12 firefighters were still missing, according to Chittagong divisional central fire service.
Anisur Rahman, deputy director of the Chittagong divisional fire service, told Dhaka Tribune that a total of 250 to 300 firefighters from 25 fire service units were working to douse the blaze.
The fire has killed at least 28 people as of 11:15am on Sunday, according to Assistant Sub-Inspector Alauddin Talukdar of Chittagong Medical College Hospital police outpost.
