Bodies to be handed over to deceased’s families after DNA profiling

The bodies of the people killed in a fire at BM Container Depot in Chittagong will be handed over to the deceased’s families after DNA profiling.

"Autopsies will be performed on all bodies and DNA samples will be stored. We will not hand over any bodies unless their identities are confirmed”, CMP (Chawkbazar Zone) Assistant Commissioner of Police Shahidul Islam told Bangla Tribune on Sunday.

ASI Alauddin Talukder of CMCH police outpost said: “The bodies brought in after 9am are in such bad condition that their identities are impossible to determine. DNA tests are necessary to identify them.”

Sixty-eight patients are receiving treatment at CMCH, while many others are being provided with medical care at various private hospitals in the city.

The fire, which broke out at the depot late on Saturday, has so far killed 37 people and injured over 450.

At least five firefighters had died while trying to douse the flames, Fire Service and Civil Defence chief Brig Gen Md Main Uddin told the media.
