Depot fire: Fireman burnt to death before meeting newborn daughter

He was supposed to take leave and visit his family soon

A fireman, trying to douse a blaze at BM Container Depot in Chittagong, has succumbed to his injuries before he got the chance to meet his newborn daughter.

The deceased, Moniruzzaman Monir, 32, was working as a nursing assistant at Kumira Fire Service Station in Chittagong, said Comilla’s Satbaria UP member Joynal Abedin.

Monir died even before getting the chance to hold his seven-day-old daughter in Barisal. He was supposed to take leave and visit his there family soon, he added.

The fireman’s uncle Mir Hossain said: "I got the news that Monir was injured while he was on duty to put out the fire in Sitakunda on Saturday. After going to Chittagong Medical College Hospital, I was informed that Monir had died.”

Meanwhile, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Comilla’s Nangalkot police station Faruk Hossain said police will take steps to assist the victim’s family. 

The fire, which broke out at the depot in Sitakunda late on Saturday, has so far killed 43 people and injured over 450.

The government has announced to give Tk50,000 in compensation to the families of each person killed in the fire, while each injured would receive Tk20,000, Chittagong Divisional Commissioner Md Ashraf Uddin told the media on Sunday.
