Journalist stabbed after publishing news on teen gang in Narayanganj
Bystander gets injured while trying to save him; victims yet to file police complaint
Two people, including a journalist for a local newspaper in Narayanganj, have been stabbed allegedly for publishing news on a clash between two teen gangs armed with sharp weapons.
The incident was reported from the city’s Golachipa Muktijuddha Road area at around 10pm on Friday.
The injured are “Dainik Agrabani Pratidin” Executive Editor Md Rashid Chowdhury, 28, and local yarn trader Jashim Hossain, 38.
According to witnesses and the family members of the injured, Rashid was returning home after work when some people obstructed his path in the Boali canal area, before stabbing him in the right side of his abdomen and his hand.
Jasim, who was on the same road, got stabbed while trying to save Rashid.
The attackers fled the scene when locals rushed to the spot after hearing Rashid’s and Jashim’s calls for help.
The two were rescued and taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital after receiving first aid at Narayanganj General Hospital on the same night.
Jasim Hossain was later sent home, but Rashid is still undergoing treatment.
Syed Sifat Al Rahman, general secretary of Narayanganj City Press Club and correspondent of Ananda TV, said police had inspected the spot, but no case had been filed yet.
He added that the teen gang might have attacked Rashid as he was a journalist. “We have identified Masum and Shanto as two of the attackers.”
Dhaka Tribune could not reach the Fatullah model police station OC Rakibuzzaman Rakib for comment.
