Speedboat sinks in Sandwip: Bodies of two children found, one still missing

Three children have so far been found dead

Fire Service members on Friday recovered the bodies of two of the three missing children who drowned in a speedboat accident during a storm in Sandwip of Chittagong two days ago.

With this, three bodies have so far been found in the Sandwip Channel. Rescuers are working to find the body of another child who is still missing.

The deceased were identified as six-year-old Israt Jahan Adiba, daughter of Oman expatriate Md Alauddin of Sanwip Upazila, and Monir Hossain Saikat, 10, son of Samir Hossain of Magadhara.

Rescuers found the body of Adiba some 25km away from Maitbhanga Ghat around 10am, said Kiriti Ranjan Barua, station officer of Sandwip Fire Service and Civil Defence. 

On the other hand, Saikat's body was discovered in Urkirchar area around 5pm, said Kiriti Ranjan Barua, an official of Sandwip Fire Station.

Kiriti Ranjan Barua said that the Coast Guard members assisted them to recover the bodies.

The speedboat carrying 20 passengers sank in Chittagong's Sandwip Channel during a nor’wester on Wednesday. A teenager’s body was recovered the same day. The deceased is 14-year-old Nusrat Jahan Anika.

On Thursday, the authorities formed a probe committee, led by Upazila Assistant Commissioner (Land) Mohammad Moin Uddin.

Meanwhile, locals formed a human chain in the Upazila Complex area on Friday afternoon, demanding the arrest and punishment of the leaseholder and the speedboat driver.

They also asked the government to take proper steps to ensure a safe journey to Sandwip.
