Police have arrested a man in a case filed for torturing his wife for dowry in Barisal’s Agailjhara Upazila.
The accused, Deepak Adhikari, from Sarbari village of the upazila, is a teacher of physical education (school section) at Askor Kalibari Secondary School and College.
His wife Monika Haldar, the plaintiff of the case, is also an assistant teacher of Naghirpar Secondary School.
According to the case, Monika was tortured by her husband on several occasions for not giving birth to a child and not paying a large amount of dowry he had demanded earlier.
She alleged that Deepak had married his second wife Ruma Sikder on the pretext of infertility, and without informing her.
“Deepak recently demanded Tk2 lakh from me and I faced physical abuse for it,” Monika added.
On February 5, Deepak again tortured her, leaving her seriously injured, said Inspector Mazharul Islam. Locals rescued Monika and took her to the Upazila Health Complex.
Monika filed the case against Deepak and Ruma with Agailjhara police station on Tuesday morning.
Later, police conducted a raid in the afternoon and arrested the accused teacher. He was sent to jail through a court.
