3 JMB members get life imprisonment, one gets 14yrs jail

Another accused in this case is a child, so his case is pending in the children's court

A Lalmonirhat court on Monday afternoon sentenced three members of banned militant outfit Jama'atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) to life imprisonment while one gets 14 years in jail.

Judge Mizanur Rahman of Lalmonirhat District and Sessions Judge Court announced the verdict, said Patgram police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Omar Farooq.

The death row convicts are Asaduzzaman alias Apel Mistry of Rasulganj area of Patgram upazila in Lalmonirhat, Shafiq Islam of the same area, and Mokhleshur Rahman alias Mokhleshar Rahman of Sohagpur area.

Tafizul Islam of Mirzarcourt area of the same upazila has been sentenced to 14 years imprisonment. Another accused in this case is a child, so his case is pending in the children's court.

According to court sources and details of the case, on August 8, 2018, Rangpur RAB-13, while conducting a raid, seized two foreign pistols, jihadi books and leaflets and detained Apel Mistry, Shafiq, Mokhleshur, Tafizul and a child from a shop in MM Plaza Market in Patgram.

Later, Sub Inspector (SI) Asaduzzaman charged them under Anti-Terrorism Act and handed them over to Patgram police station.

Advocate Akmal Hossain, Public Prosecutor (PP) of Lalmonirhat Court, said that four people were sentenced to 14 years of rigorous imprisonment under the Anti-Terrorism Act with a fine of Tk5,000. The court sentenced another six months of rigorous imprisonment. Besides, Apel, Shafiq and Mokhleshur were sentenced to life imprisonment under Section 19(f) and 19(a) of the Arms Act, 1878 in the same case.
