Shehna Falila Mulk is a corporate lawyer by profession, with a special knack for handmade and organic products. She always found them to be more effective, more creative and more artistic than the machine-made products. Having lived in London for a long time, Shehna always had the luxury of using an abundance of good-quality, handmade personal care products. However, when she moved back to Bangladesh, she realised that her choices were very limited. “When I came to know about this gap in the personal care product market in Bangladesh, that is when the idea came to me – why not make them here in Dhaka? Why not have a top-notch brand of freshly handmade, gourmet soaps and other products all made locally, but keeping up with international standards. That is how SoaperStar was born – from my own necessity for handmade and organic soaps,” explained Shehna. Why handmade soaps?Soaps are made out of oils and lye. So, the first point to note in determining the quality of a soap is to assess the quality of oils being used. When we asked Shehna why people should use handmade and organic soaps, she said, “Well the problem with commercial, mass-produced soaps is that all the natural glycerin is stripped off them to increase the shelf life and produce harder bars. This is partly why most commercial soaps tend to be drying. Handmade soaps, on the other hand, contain the natural glycerin, which makes your skin feel soft and supple. Secondly, if you look at the list of ingredients in the commercial soaps, you will find an exhaustive list of chemicals and detergents, that are, in fact, bad for your skin in the long run. Handmade Soaps, do not contain such chemicals and hence are kinder to your skin. Thirdly, handmade organic soaps, such as those made at SoaperStar contain fresh and organic ingredients that are known to be good for your skin (goat milk, fresh fruit and vegetable purees) so that your skin can actually benefit from the goodness that nature has to offer.” SoaperStar firmly believes that “nature heals” – it's one of their slogans. “When you use a freshly handmade soap, like the ones we have at SoaperStar, you will immediately notice how it leaves your skin supple, moisturised and glowing. With all these wonderful benefits, why would anyone not use handmade soaps?” opined Shehna.SoaperStar is all about offering solutions. Their target customers include men, women and even children – anyone looking for a good bar of soap, whether to cure a skin condition or to improve the quality of the skin. Their mission is to become the leading brand in the handmade, gourmet soaps and personal care product industry in Dhaka and gradually become a mainstream contender in the global market. Talking about how her natural soaps differ from commercially produced soaps, Shehna revealed some interesting facts. “Our soaps are all handmade (literally!) from scratch using top quality oils and other fresh and natural ingredients – something commercial soaps cannot afford to do because of economic reasons and the shelf life issue. Moreover, unlike commercial soaps, we do not use chemicals in our products which means your skin is saved from the unnecessary and often harmful chemicals found in commercial soaps (fragrance, colour, chemicals, etc).”At SoaperStar, each soap recipe is formulated in order to offer a solution to a particular problem. The natural and fresh ingredients that they use in their products are well known to cure skin problems -  something that commercial mass produced soaps cannot offer. In a nutshell, these organic soaps offer far more benefits than the commercial soaps because of fact that they are “freshly handmade.” Most of their soaps have a shelf life of a year or more. Some soaps, especially those made with fresh vegetable and fruit purees, have shorter shelf lives, about six months (roughly) but they always sell their soaps fresh and advise their customers to use the soaps within that time. SoaperStar uses fresh and local ingredients – good export quality oils, good grade lye, fresh and organic vegetables and fruits, local goat milk, loofah, etc. However, there are some ingredients which are not available in the market or there are quality issues involved. Hence, those ingredients are imported from the UK, and they always mention that to their customers.SoaperStar is not all about soaps, though. They have gained considerable popularity in the market with their face masks (especially the sticky rice mask), 100% pure and freshly handmade coconut oil, their hair therapy anti- hair fall Shampoo (a NO -SULPHATE shampoo!), skin correcting gels and body scrubs. The prices of their products range from Tk500 to Tk1200.   “We will be launching our face creams and body lotions very soon. SoaperStar is dedicated to offering solutions, whether it be for skin or hair, whether in the form of soaps or hair Oils. We are taking one problem at a time and launching products that offer a solution to the problem,” informed Shehna Falila Mulk, while talking about her future plans regarding SoaperStar.
