What is independence to you?

Update : 30 Mar 2017, 05:48 PM
Does it mean that you are free to live a life without rules and conditions? Free to go about your day without anyone else intervening? Or in more practical terms, does it mean self-determination. Some 46 years ago, independence for us meant self-dermination. We fought a war to earn that right and our freedom. Three million lives sacrificed, and here we are today, living, breathing, eating as an independent nation. This week, we talk to seven men and women to find out what independence means to them on a personal level. “Independence is to realise that you are truly happy staying within the boundary of social norms and values and not breaching any laws of the land.”- Tahreem, 32“Esoterically, to me independence is the liberty and freedom in the pursuit of happiness.”-Mahmood, 31“Independence means listening to your own instincts, intuitions and ideas, without letting others manipulate, control or coerce you. And not having to explain yourself to others.”-Tahmina, 27“For me, independence means being self-reliant and having the freedom to make my own decisions and choices.”-Timothy, 29“Independence is being able to sing at the top of my lungs, without being told every time that I am out of tune.”-Omar, 26“Independence means (without harming anyone) being able to do whatever you want, go wherever you want, whenever you want, wearing whatever you want. Speaking, singing, dreaming about anything you want--without being judged, held back, harassed or threatened.”-Sayeda, 23“To me, independence is living a fearless life. Living a life with dignity, respect and honesty. And being a person who inspires others.”-Rupa, 30
