Style report: Riccardo Tisci collaborates with Nike yet again

Update : 16 Feb 2017, 03:35 PM
The list of must-haves is a never-ending one for all those sneaker-heads out there. Nearly a few days after Riccardo Tisci’s announcement on leaving his role as creative director of Givenchy, his latest project was actually a new line of sneakers from Nike. Officially named NikeLab Dunk Lux Chukka x RT, it’s the second time he has gotten together with the sports brand titans. The first trip around produced the NikeLab Dunk Lux High x RT, not to mention spearheading the Air Force 1 RT, Transform Flyknit and Air Zoom Legend. An impressive line indeed. What usually happens with these legends of the fashion scene is other non-direct competition gives way to keep their creative juices flowing. Clearly, Nike has been a safety go-to for Tisci. Truth be told, you slap on that Nike Swoosh logo and Tisci’s initials and you’ve got yourself a pair of not-so-affordable sneakers. And at first glance, it’s not much to look at. Sure, you’ll be able to appreciate the simplicity of the design and minimal take on the overall look, but the devil’s in the details. When it comes to quality from the veterans of the fashion world, details simply cannot be taken for granted. In fact, on majority of menswear items, the details are what make them very valuable. These new pairs show off the larger than average Swoosh logos, drawing the eyes to its main focus. There’s also the enlarged foxing and eyestays, and the removal of the traditional toe perforations. The Swoosh is also found embossed on the heel in all three colour variants: black, white and red. In addition, the new pairs have drop-in Lunarlon insoles and memory foam inside the quilted leather collar and tongue. The new high-tops will be available later in this month and in demand by both sexes, be sure of that. Forking over $200 (£171 in the UK) for a fresh pair of Nike sneakers may seem a lot but as mentioned, it’s all in the details. Many may argue that these so called iconic sneakers aren’t worth complimenting the high price tag. You wouldn’t be too far from the truth because to most, shelling over so much for a pair of simple sneakers is a waste of money. Well, the same could be said by walking into a Michelin starred restaurant to pay for an exquisite, snack-sized meal and flawless service. At least shoes designed by Riccardo Tisci can be considered a piece of art worth investing in. You know, wearable fashion that can be used over and over again without flushing it down the toilet like you did with last night’s meal.

But, who am I to judge. We all have the right to splurge from time to time, whether it be on a delicious meal or a fresh pair of Nike sneakers. These are simply reasons to defend a sneaker head’s desires without actually having to be one. Growing up in Southern California in the 80s/90s, I assure you, the culture behind collecting sneakers run deep in the people who find themselves idolising their sports legends. The same passion has found itself onto high-street fashion and in the hands of famous European designers. What was once made for function and the streets has now made its way into the highest echelon of fashion. Don’t be fooled either, you’ll start to see more affordable sneakers in a similar design, mocking certain details of the new NikeLab line. Once a trend is set, everything else starts to look a bit too common. So if you’re planning to impress your friends or significant other with these new pairs, as DJ Khaled would say, “Don’t play yaself.” Invest in a beautiful, comfortable and quality pair of sneakers, which clearly these Tisci designed shoes are meant to be. At the end of the day, only you will have the comfort knowing (and feeling) that you’ve placed your money on something valuable and versatile. And if that doesn’t sell you, just take a look at the promotional photos of these Nike shoes on the Internet. Riccardo Tisci has Bella Hadid sitting on his lap sporting a fresh new pair. Why not, right?
