Congratulations, you’re married! The year long preparations are over, the colourful events -- the holud, the mehndi, the wedding programme itself -- and now you and your partner are ready to start a beautiful life together. So, what comes up next is the honeymoon!
Santorini, Switzerland, and Paris seem to be high on the list of dream honeymoon places but there are a lot of adventurous married couples who dream of going on a Euro trip for their honeymoon and I’ve always been asked questions about my own dream honeymoon trip. So here’s my own little honeymoon itinerary, a list of places which I feel would make a beautiful honeymoon trip for all those beautiful couples out there.
Paris has been a city associated with romance for ages and why shouldn’t it be? Paris has been the setting for some of the most romantic movies such as Before Sunset, Midnight in Paris, Moulin Rouge, Me before You and honestly I don’t think any movie or photo can do this any enchanting city justice. Architecture, history, events, nightlife, food -- name it and this city has it all. Paris is also known as the City of Lights and to really experience this, you’ll need to do a tour of the city at night -- the city literally starts twinkling at night! Make sure you go for a romantic stroll alongside the Seine River and of course a romantic photo in front of the Eiffel Tower is always recommended.
Amsterdam is probably the most well-known tourist city in Europe and a hub for honeymooners. The mere mention of a Euro trip and voila, Amsterdam will be there on the list. And if you visit Amsterdam, you’ll realise why this is not surprising at all. From the coffee shops to the canals, the beautiful buildings to the botanical gardens, the musical concerts to the museums, Amsterdam is a place to discover culture.
Bruges, a picturesque little village famous for its cobbled streets, canals, medieval buildings, and swans! A medieval city in the region of Flanders in Northern Belgium, I have visited Bruges twice already and have never failed to wonder at just how beautiful this place is. A trip to Belgium is incomplete without a trip to Bruges and so a day trip to Bruges from Brussels is an ideal travel opportunity for those wanting to honeymoon in Belgium.Budapest
A city of picturesque landmarks and romantic rooftop restaurants, Budapest is perfect for newlyweds. The Fisherman’s Bastion was my favourite place in Budapest. I literally couldn’t stop taking photos, it was just so magnificent. A few minutes walk from the Chain Bridge and located near Matthias Church on the Buda Side of the city, the Fisherman’s Bastion felt like something out of a fairy tale. With its turrets, staircases and medieval architecture, the Fisherman’s Bastion is a place you must visit if you want to experience the true beauty that Budapest is famous for. Opt for a romantic cruise on the Danube during sunrise with your loved one and experience some of the magnificent views of The Hungarian Parliament.
The capital of Austria, Vienna has to be on the list of best honeymoon destinations in Europe. One of the most romantic places Vienna. The views from the top of the wheel are absolutely stunning and you can even book a private, luxury cabin with dinner for two included. Another place I would highly recommend is Schönbrunn Palace, Vienna’s nuber one attraction. A state-of-the-art palace standing impressively amongst the artistic Schönbrunn gardens. Schönbrunn meaning “beautiful spring” was named after the artesian well from which court got its water. For those intending to travel to Vienna for their honeymoon and especially those interested in history and architecture, put this palace on your list!
A trip to Austria is incomplete without a trip to Salzburg. Salzburg is an iconic Austrian city with beautiful buildings, mountain scenery and a very famous love lock bridge. It’s also a place of interest for music lovers since Salzburg is the birthplace of Mozart and in the mid-20th century the city was the setting for the musical play The sound of music. When I set my eyes on Salzburg, I instantly understood where Mozart got all his inspiration from. To be born in a place which looks like a melody itself, music must have run through his blood! Due to its miniature size it’s ideal for a day trip from Vienna. The train journey from Vienna to Salzburg takes around two and a half hours and the scenes along the way are well worth every minute of it. Do not forget to put a lock on love lock bridge in Salzburg -- one of the prettiest love lock bridges in Europe spanning from one mountain to another.
Prague, a city so beautiful, I actually wanted to cancel our flight back to the UK to spend a few more days here. And I was damn serious. For anyone intending on travelling to Prague for their honeymoon I would recommend a good four to five days in this city to be able to cover all the beautiful locations. Prague has the perfect mixture of nature, history and architecture. Add a sprinkle of sunshine and Autumn colours and you have the perfect honeymoon destination. A haven for photography enthusiasts like myself, Prague has some of the best locations for taking stunning couple photos. Did you know Prague is the only city in the world with a special day for lovers – May 1, and a kiss in front of the statue of the romantic poet Karel Macha in the Petřín Hill Park will make your love eternal -- whether you believe it or not, trust me, on your honeymoon, you’ll find it cute.
Two other countries people always keep asking me about is Italy or Switzerland. Now, when I went to Italy I only managed to cover the north of Italy and it took me two weeks. I’m now planning a trip to the South. Italy is a full trip in itself and perhaps you can add only Venice to your list of European countries to visit during your honeymoon, but it would honestly be a crime to miss out Rome, Florence and many other cities. Same goes for Switzerland.
Budget, budget, budget!
Often we get carried away by someone else’s honeymoon goals, but their goals shouldn’t be yours. Plan your budget before deciding on the location, can you practically visit so many countries or is just the one okay for you? Can you travel for three weeks or will just three to four days be
enough? Make sure the honeymoon destination you choose will match your budget, the season you’re traveling in and the duration of the trip. Budget honeymoons, budget flights, budget hotels are in abundance in all of the above countries -- do your research beforehand.
Finally, we all know a honeymoon is very important, it’s a big deal and ofcourse it should be. But remember, it’s not about the place that’s special, it’s the person you visit the place with. A honeymoon, after all, is a celebration of love and a new life. Only special moments with your loved one can make your honeymoon a magical experience -- it can turn an ordinary sunset or an ordinary walk into a spectacular one!
