The online bakery boutique with all things delicious and healthy
“Creativity is expensive” said a passionate, self-taught baker, Shatabdi Iqbal. Elaborating on the statement, Shatabdi said that creativity is a unique quality that every individual perceives differently. After graduating, when Shatabdi had the chance to find out what she was most creative at, she finally discovered that baking was the skill she wanted to master. Now, her small online boutique goes by the name ‘Baker Street Bakery’.
In November 2018, Shatabdi decided to open a page and sell her bakery items online. The decision was not made over night; rather, it was after many years of struggling as a student, running a fashion house named ‘Adam and Eve’ and finding what she was deeply passionate about. Since childhood, Shatabdi loved drawing, the arts and baking. Her current work evidently shows her constant love for drawing and baking. When it comes to the latter, she tries to incorporate art as well. Every item that she creates is left with a touch of hand painted edible artwork. This, along with her luscious cakes, marks her work as eccentric. At the end of 2018, she first started catering cakes for her best friend’s sushi restaurant. With that began the official journey of her venture. She then catered cakes and savory items to Nerdy Beans.
A self-taught baker, Shatabdi runs her online bakery with her distinctive cakes. Shatabdi is very specific about what kind of cake she makes and the way she wants to present it. Fondants aren’t, and will perhaps never be, on the list. She does not mind other bakers using it, but when it comes to her own work, Shatabdi would rather use plastic flowers to make the cake look more appealing. According to her, fondant takes away the moisture from the cake with its heavily sugary-coating. Instead of giving a 3D effect with thick fondant, Shatabdi hand paints all over her cake with edible colours to keep the flavour of the cake intact. In regards to placing plastic flowers or any other accessories, Shatabdi places it imperfectly to make the cake look more natural. However they are arranged, the end product is always pleasing to the eye.
Shatabdi’s bakery selections simply do not end with cakes. She serves frozen and healthy meals, and jars of home-made condiments as well. She also loves to play around with the names of her food items. For instance, she named her popular red velvet cake as ‘Queen of Hearts’. Other names include: Stairway to Heaven, White Walker, Deathly Hallows, Cloud 9, Sirius Black and so on. Shatabdi believes that these kinds of fun names tend to grab the customers’ attention. With that in mind, she took the name of her venture ‘Baker Street Bakery’ from her favourite detective series ‘Sherlock Holmes’.
Shatabdi is keen on bringing new bakery and frozen items items to the menu every year. She said: “People do not like to have the same item for a long time. They want to try something new, and that is what I want to give them.” That being said, she is also planning on bringing vegan recipes to her menu. As she is still in the process of becoming fully vegan, she is taking some time to come up with the recipes that would satisfy everybody’s tastebuds.
Shatabdi sees herself as her own competitor. If there is anything that she loves, that is to take challenges. Every positive and negative result has always been a learning experience for her. She has been lucky to have customers who would give her the theme and she would give them their desired cakes. As she takes customized orders, it becomes difficult at times to satisfy the clients 100 percent. There have been incidents where she refunded her customers because she felt responsible for not being able to satisfy them completely. Shatabdi said: “Even if clients are wrong, they are always right.” With each delivery she takes pointers on how to improve the cakes and the relationship with her clients.
Each day is a new day and everyone has different tastebuds. Understanding this, she always takes her mother’s genuine criticism and, thus, finalizes the cake to send it to her client’s doorstep.
