Summer styles to follow
80’s fashion went through quite a transition in the minds of the millennials – from being the decade everyone wanted to pretend didn’t happen, to the one that was ‘ironically’ cool, and finally, with all the force of nostalgia, those mom jeans and power shoulders are cool again for real.
Sumaya Khan’s SS19 collection, which dropped on May 23 at a special showcase at Bistro E, hearkens back to the 80’s vibe in Dhaka. For this collection, the designer eschews her signature baby pastels in favour of bright, fruity sorbet shades that go perfectly with the season. The billowy silhouettes with the gathered waists and powerful shoulders make that perfect 80’s throwback.
Keeping the detailing simple, with tasteful floral embroidery and discreet pearl buttons, the outfits, which comprise of monochromatic pantsuits, and feminine separates that can be mixed and matched into a shalwar kameez ensemble of your own choosing, the collection is an invitation to play, style, and move with comfort, secure in the knowledge that the result will ultimately be elegant. Khan puts emphasis on comfort and construction. “I get repeat clients who come back because they can trust the finishing of the product’ says Khan, who draws from the experience of having grown up around her family’s successful tailoring business. As always, she creates her designs with students and working women in mind, and so the clothes are comfortable, low maintenance, and priced modestly. And because no two fashionista is created equally, Sumaya Khan Couture is offering customization and bespoke services.
