Dhaka Tribune’s 'Share Your Meal' initiative continues in Hazaribag

The aim is to help destitute people with no work due to the coronavirus lockdown

Dhaka Tribune, in collaboration with Prochesta Foundation, distributed iftar packages to hundreds of underprivileged people of Dhaka city in an initiative called Share Your Meal to uphold the true spirit of Ramadan.

The initiative is to come to the aid of destitute people left without jobs due to the lockdown meant to curb the spread of coronavirus.

On Sunday afternoon, iftar packages were distributed   in front of BGB Gate 5 to some 650 people in the underprivileged community of  Hazaribag.

People collected the iftar packages from volunteers just after Asr prayers, standing in line and maintaining social distancing rules.

Talking with this correspondent, Abdul Mia, a tannery worker of the area, said the factory he worked at is closed due to the pandemic, leaving him unemployed. Receiving an iftar package of khichuri and chicken is a matter of joy for them.

Halima Khatun, a slum dweller who picked up an iftar package too, said she was a maid at a nearby mess but the current crisis has made her jobless.

Her only income source has been closed off for two months, forcing her to rely on relief goods and aid, and food from the streets.

Khairul Bashar, a local volunteer, led the group of 20 volunteers in distributing the iftar.

He said there are many tannery and garment workers, and workers from the New Market area living in Hazaribag, most of whom are going through a rough time.

“We distributed iftar in this area so that these underprivileged people could enjoy a good meal at least once today,” Khairul said.

He also thanked Dhaka Tribune for undertaking such a timely initiative.

Under this campaign, iftar will be distributed to 3,000-5,000 people throughout the month of Ramadan. The cost of each packet of nourishing iftar has been set at Tk75.

Share Your Meal has started collecting donations from Dhaka Tribune management, social organizations, and people at large.

But this endeavour needs more resources and funds to serve thousands of people. Any contribution from anyone can make a huge difference.

Share Your Meal program started its operations on May 10 by giving food support to the people of Begunbari in Dhaka.  This campaign aims to serve iftar to people living in various slums of Dhaka.

As the success of this initiative depends on the availability of funds, Dhaka Tribune requests everyone to make a contribution to this noble cause.

Donations can be made by mobile money transfer (bKash, Rocket, and Nagad - 01614926838) and bank transfer (AB Bank, Karwan Bazar Branch, A/C- 4002-436428-441).

The Share Your Meal initiative follows another fundraising campaign by Dhaka Tribune in partnership with JCI Dhaka Young and five NGOs, named Serve the Future, which also aims to provide essential commodities to underprivileged people.

The first phase of this campaign successfully took place in Dhaka’s Rayer Bazar area on April 24, when 225 families were given basic necessity packages of rice, lentil, potatoes, onions, oil, salt, soap, and reusable masks.

Preparations for the next phases are underway.

Donations to Serve the Future can be made the same way as for Share Your Meal.
