In pictures: The lost river

The Teesta water-sharing pact between India and Bangladesh has long been an elusive dream for the latter as India tends to barricade the water supply from their end for much of the year. It is only during the monsoon when our neighbours let loose on the impediment when there is an excess – resulting in horrendous floods on our side of the border. 

For the rest of the year, the mighty Teesta river is reduced to a mere a shadow of its former self, with chars making up most the area that had once been the major source of livelihood for inhabitants in the region.
